Psalms 68:1-6
1 Let God arise, let His enemies be scattered, And let those who hate Him flee before Him. 2 As smoke is driven away, {so} drive {them} away; As wax melts before the fire, {So} let the wicked perish before God. 3 But let the righteous be glad; let them exult before God; Yes, let them rejoice with gladness. 4 Sing to God, sing praises to His name; Lift up {a song} for Him who rides through the deserts, Whose name is the LORD, and exult before Him. 5 A father of the fatherless and a judge for the widows, Is God in His holy habitation. 6 God makes a home for the lonely; He leads out the prisoners into prosperity, Only the rebellious dwell in a parched land.

When I read this, I picture a dad, walking up to his son who is being hassled by a bunch of older boys.  The dad looks down at his son and says, “Is there a problem here that I need to take care of?” The boy just looks at the older kids, who are fidgeting and trying to avoid the dad’s steady gaze.  Finally, one of the kids says, “Let’s get out of here!” and they all run for their lives.

But the verse that gets me every time, is verse 5.

“A father of the fatherless…”

For those of you out there who have lived their lives without a father, a human father, a real dad, my heart goes out to you.  You have lived without a personal, close-by hero, to look up to.  You have lived with a huge hole in your life, where a dad was supposed to be.  And for that, I am sorry.

But you DO have a dad.  That is, if you’ll let Him be your dad.

There is a Father who cares about you, loves you, thinks about you, is proud of you, longs to talk to you, is ready to listen to you, cries when you’re hurting, wants to hold you when you cry, whether you’re 5 years old, or 125 years old, or somewhere inbetween.  And all you have to do, is call out His Name.  His Name is Almighty God.  And even though He’s got more power in his pinky finger than all of the neutron bombs of the world combined together, He’s got a heart full of love for you, and He’s ready to share that love with you… if you want it.  And if you have a human dad, then you can still have a Heanvely Dad.  I don’t think your human dad would mind you having another dad as well.

So, if the position of “Dad” is still open in your life, I know He’s eager to apply.  Just let Him know that you’re willing to accept His application.  I mean, His resume is pretty impressive.

Ephesians 1:18-19
“I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might…”
